Arts, a Growing Sector in Floyd County

Floyd County also has a strong artist community with scores of studios, including the 16-Hands Studio Tour of pottery artists each May and November and the Floyd Artisan Trail each June with more than 60 participating artists and artisans. The Jacksonville Center for the Arts in Floyd is a regional center for rural creativity and features a gallery, arts businesses, classes and events. Many local stores feature Floyd-made glass, pottery, quilts, and furniture. The Floyd Woman’s Club Arts and Crafts Show held the first weekend in October fills the high school’s gyms and grounds with scores of vendors and thousands of visitors. Floyd is also a major part of Round the Mountain: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Network.

Music, a Growing Sector in Floyd County

A touchstone of The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail and the Round the Mountain Artisan Trail, Floyd is home to diverse music icons like the Friday Night Jamboree at the Floyd Country Store (bluegrass and old-time music), Floydfest (world-music festival), Chateau Morrisette Winery’s Blues and Jazz festivals, Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival (classical music), Chantilly Farm’s Bluegrass and BBQ Festival, and the Floyd YogaJam. Floydfest, for example, is a 4-day music extravaganza with eight stages and 15,000 people. Music is part of life in Floyd, with live music 5 days a week downtown and diverse music lessons available to children and adults alike, including a Music Lab.

Recreation, a Growing Sector in Floyd County

Recreational opportunities abound in and around Floyd. The County is traversed by nearly 40 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway, a biking and hiking mecca. The Blue Ridge Parkway is only six miles from the heart of Floyd and its only stoplight. Along this stretch of the Parkway are Rocky Knob and Smart View Recreational Areas, Rock Castle Gorge National Recreational Area, and Mabry Mill which is the most photographed site on the Parkway.  The highest point in the County (at 3,971 feet) is Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve, which is a large forested area with hiking trails and a panoramic view.

Other recreational opportunities within 50 miles include the New River, Fairy Stone State Park, Jefferson National Forest, Dixie Caverns, Smith Mountain Lake, Mountain Lake, Claytor Lake, Philpott Lake, the New River Trail, and The Appalachian Trail.

Blue Ridge Parkway

“Experience America’s Favorite Drive” and a haven for cyclists and hikers. There are about 40 miles of the Parkway running along the southern border of Floyd County.

Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve

“Buffalo Mountain is one of the most significant natural areas in Virginia. It boasts an amazing 13 rare plant occurences, 3 rare animal occurrences, and 6 significant natural communities.
